4 Great Foods for Healthy Teeth

Oral health and good teeth aren’t just about brushing, flossing, mouth rinsing, and general dental hygiene. We need to look at the wider picture. The broader picture involves looking at the foods you eat and asking yourself, “is this good for my oral health?”

OK, of course, it is not always as straightforward as that, and we are all entitled to indulge in sweet things and sodas from time to time- the important thing is to remember balance and moderation. It also helps to think about the state of your current dental hygiene and oral health. If you suffer from things like cavities, bad breath, and have an acidic diet overall, then it is always best to preserve your current state and make efforts to improve it rather than potentially make it worse!

Supporting Good Oral Hygiene through Diet

As promised, here are 4 great foods that assist in healthy teeth and hygiene!

  1. Dairy Products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt. As we may be aware, dairy produce is high in calcium, and calcium helps to build stronger teeth and bones. Cheese is high in a protein named “casein”; this protein is super at helping to fortify and strengthen your tooth enamel. Milk, cheese, and yogurt are very low in acidity and so they can help to lower the levels of acidity in your mouth, and by extension, assist in combatting cavities and tooth decay.
  2. Apples and other fibrous fruit (such as pears). Hard or crunchy fruits can help to increase the salivation process in the mouth, this can help to neutralize harsh acids that can contribute to the cavity and tooth decay (like citric acid and malic acid). It is better to crunch and chew on an actual apple rather than drink apple juice; this is because the process of chewing helps to stimulate saliva and your gums. Also, apple juice may contain sugars and preservatives that can have a detrimental effect on dental health.
  3. Go nuts for nuts! Nuts are a valuable source of calcium, vitamin D, and E. Most types of nuts also contain a multitude of minerals that can be beneficial for oral health and general health also. Specifically, walnuts, cashews, almonds, Brazil nuts, and peanuts can help to lower acid levels, stimulate the chewing process, and help to fight bacteria in the mouth and tooth decay.
  4. Water! Yes, water helps to protect your teeth in numerous ways. For instance, it can assist in clearing bacteria and toxins from your body, aids in digestion and the adequate breaking down of food; it also helps to remove particles of food from your mouth and teeth, and encourages the production of saliva. It is the healthiest drink you can drink. Remember, your body is comprised of around 70% water; evidently it is something that your body needs to survive and thrive.

Hopefully, these small reminders on good foods for your teeth and oral health can help you to live a life free of tooth decay! Keep in mind that young members of your family will benefit greatly when you instill in them good dental hygiene habits- always include “good for you” foods on a daily basis into their diet!

“The three root causes of nearly all dental disease are saliva issues, frequent snacking, and a poor home care routine. Likewise, just as a healthy diet and exercise serve as protective factors against heart disease, a number of protective therapy recommendations can correct a bacterial imbalance and protect your teeth from issues in the future. An approach like CRM™ (Caries Risk Management) is focused on finding the source of the problem rather than treating symptoms as they flare up. It looks at the patient’s risk factors and focuses on addressing those factors, thereby interrupting the disease process before caries develop and threaten oral health”- CariFree

So how can you understand a little more about your current dental and oral health?

There is a quick and helpful quiz on this matter offered to you by CariFree. Dr. Kutsch, the founder of CariFree, has created a new model for oral health and cavity prevention. Do you ever wonder why some people continue to get cavities despite meticulous oral hygiene, whereas others who rarely brush and floss do not? Can a person be cavity-prone? Cavities are caused by a bacterial imbalance in your mouth, and when dentists drill and fill cavities, they are only treating the result of the infection, not the imbalance itself—and the decay returns. But there is a way forward! CariFree’s pH elevated products neutralize decay-causing acids and fix your decay problem at its source.
Their products are safe to use daily; they are non-abrasive and highly effective. CariFree products are scientifically proven to prevent cavities through remineralization.

“The oral health habits many of us learned from a young age can lead to a range of dental concerns. That’s why it’s important to understand how to take care of your mouth in a smarter, simpler way. While brushing and flossing can reduce bacteria, neither alters the current acidic bacterial balance in your mouth.
