Air & Weather is a small, niche perfumery in New York founded in 2021 by artist-musician-parfumeur Julia Crowe, with her debut scent release, Linden perfume, inspired by the tree flowers that bloom for two weeks every June inside Manhattan’s iconic Stuyvesant Square Park.

Linden by Air & Weather is a calming and uplifting floral that captures the pure essence of real linden flowers, with top notes of linden blossoms and neroli, heart notes of jasmine, honey, and tuberose, and a base of light woods.  This year, the scent was included in “the perfumer’s perfumer” Michael Edwards’ Fragrance of the World collection, where it was described as a “crisp, white floral; subtle, warm, and sophisticated.” 

Linden trees (Tilia Cordata), sometimes known as lime trees in the United Kingdom, have a special significance around the world for their characteristic heart-shaped leaves and the peace conferred by their fragrant blossoms.  Linden trees can live up to 1,000 years and produce blooms that honeybees visit to make linden honey, while folk medicine has long used dried leaves and blooms in a tea to encourage calm.  

Linden by Air & Weather is a light, casual, distinctive, yet easy-to-wear scent that may be worn all year.  The fragrance comes in three sizes: a 10 ml/.33 oz. travel spray vial, a 1 ounce/30 ml spray bottle, and a 10 ml/.33 oz. moisturizing roll-on oil-based perfume.   

The Journey Through the Eyes of Founder, and Creator, Crowe

 “It took me three years to arrive at the current formula because the blooming window is so very narrow for this flower—only two weeks,” Crowe says.  “In 2019, we had a series of heavy rainstorms in Manhattan which stripped the blooms off the trees, leaving me with just a couple days to inhale their fragrance.  Finally, in the pandemic year, I happily nailed it as the park was one place where I could remove my face mask and simply spend time soaking the scent of the blooms outdoors whilst contemplating how this one flower threads through history of this city into the present day.  In 1747, Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus sent his student Pehr Kalm on a journey through the North American Colonies to inventory its flora and fauna in 1747.  Kalm reported during his visit to New York City that its large countryside and farming estates bore fruit trees, stately elms, water beech trees and linden trees.  Peter Stuyvesant Park used to be farmland until it was turned into a public park around 1847 or so and features one of the second oldest cast iron fences in the city in addition to its towering linden trees, which have been enjoyed by so many throughout the decades.  My goal was to capture the lightest essence of linden blooms to create a fragrance that is comforting, gentle, and timeless.”
