The Wilkerson Bakery story is as much about romance as it is about baking. Dewey Guy Wilkerson met Clara Jones and they were married in 1919. Clara’s father , along with her brothers, built a brick oven to make daily bread and Dewey worked for the Jones Brothers Bakery. Soon, though, Dewey’s talent for baking shone through, and he opened his own bakery in 1930. The rest, you could say, is history.
Wilkerson honed his baking skills and took pride in each and every hand-made treat. His kindness was legendary and he would often tell his customers, ‘you’re credit is good here, pay me when you can’.
Moravian baked products became one of the specialties of the bakery, with a Wilkerson Bakery menu made up of Moravian Sugar Cake, Lovefeast Buns and Moravian Cookies. In fact, this line became so popular that they could barely keep up with the demand. Wilkerson senior started experimenting with ingredients and techniques, and soon began rolling the cookies paper-thin.
