BeautyCollagen, It’s More than What You Think!

Collagen, It’s More than What You Think!

When people say the word collagen, they often think of something that is used to boost one’s appearance. The image of puffy lips and faces might enter one’s consciousness. While it is true that collagen plays an important role in preserving one’s beauty, it is so much more than that. It’s not just something that is injected, it’s also something that is ingested. Collagen holds together so much of our body that it’s unbelievable. Without it, one’s body would not be complete. Just like with protein and other types of nutrients, it’s quite hard to obtain enough collagen from one’s diet. It’s extremely difficult for people to keep track of the measurement of nutrients in their crazy hectic lives. Finding the right kind of supplement with just the right amount of collagen to benefit the body is quite a difficult task. BioOptimal Supplements, LLC is here to save the day with plentiful amounts of collagen contained in their treasured products.

What is Collagen?

As stated, while collagen plays a great part in preserving one’s beauty and health, it is part of a bigger role within the body itself. So, just what is collagen? From the Greek word Colla, which means glue, it is a type of protein used to make connective tissue. Collagen is found in one’s skin, tendons, ligaments, bones, and cartilage. Think of it as a glue that holds the whole body together and impacted. Just as with many nutrients, there is a large amount of collagen that the body produces. The more that is produced by the body, the healthier the connective tissues are.

Benefits of Collagen

Since collagen helps hold one’s joints together, it also assists with recovery from injuries to various parts of the body. With the bones of the body better impacted, the healing from severe injuries like bone fractures usually doesn’t take as long when there are adequate amounts of collagen. Since collagen helps strengthen ligaments and joints, the likelihood of muscle injuries is less with plentiful amounts of it. Also, with certain types of collagens, one can slow down the aging process of their skin and even their hair. As one gets older, the hydration process of the skin weakens, therefore, causing wrinkles and fine lines. With adequate amounts of collagen, the hydration process is much improved. In addition, one’s hair does not thin as much, which also will prevent signs of aging.

Proof of the Benefits of Using Collagen

Many studies have taken place that showcase the various benefits collagen has for the body. For instance, several have shown that people who have had certain types of injuries bounced back quickly with the help of collagen supplements. According to an article in Consumer Reports, “a placebo-controlled study of 20 runners with Achilles tendon injuries found that those who took 2.5 grams of collagen twice daily had greater improvement in Achilles pain at the three-month mark and were able to return to running sooner than those taking a placebo” (Wadyka, 2020, p. 6). In other cases, the effects of collagen have been seen in conjunction with exercise. For instance, another study showed that when eight people consumed a collagen supplement that was Vitamin-C enriched, which was then followed by 6 minutes of jump roping, it “led to increased collagen synthesis in ligaments” (Wadyka, 2020, p. 6). Besides the studies focusing on collagen’s effects on joints and ligaments, there have been plenty that have centered on its effects on one’s skin. This is the area of one’s body where most people associate collagen. Indeed, it greatly benefits the skin. A review took place in 2019 of 11 studies on collagen supplementation. It was published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. It was found that “doses ranging from 2.5 to 10 grams per day did increase skin elasticity and hydration” (Wadyka, 2020, p. 6). However, don’t think of collagen supplementation as a form of plastic surgery like most people because it’s not. Think of it as a rejuvenation process. In addition to helping the skin, collagen is also useful for one’s hair and nails.

How Does the Body Make Collagen

As stated, collagen is a type of protein. Whenever a person consumes protein-rich foods, there is a special process that takes place. The consumed protein is broken down into amino acids. These amino acids are used by the body to make new proteins, which are collagen. This is a building-block process whereby amino acids from consumed protein are placed together in such a way as to form collagen. There are three specific types of amino acids that play the biggest part in creating collagen. They are known as glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.

Loss of Collagen

Once a person reaches a certain age, the amount of collagen that is produced by the body begins to decline. In fact, in a lot of cases, it starts as early as one’s mid-twenties. While aging is a general part of the body’s cutting down on collagen production, there are various other factors that play into it as well. No one can totally avoid exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. This speeds up the process of the reduction of collagen in the body. Some people, for whatever reason, spend a great deal of time in the sun during the summer months. They might have to because their job requires it. However, some people stay out in the sun for recreational purposes, and do it too much, for that matter. Over time, collagen production will begin to diminish. Even worse forms of ultraviolet rays come from tanning beds. People become very addicted to using these. The irony is that many people use tanning beds to look younger, but when their collagen levels drop,

they start to look older. Besides ultraviolet light, excessive use of tobacco products and overconsuming sugar also cause the reduction of collagen. Regardless if one does not partake in these types of activities, it is inevitable that their body will stop producing as much collagen over time.

When one’s body starts to produce less collagen, there are various changes to both one’s outer and inner health that take place. As mentioned, collagen helps one’s skin as well as their hair and nails. When the levels of it start to drop inside the body, one’s skin starts to lose a lot of its elasticity, causing wrinkles and other age-indicating spots. Also, one’s hair starts to thin. Besides the outward changes in individuals, there are many disruptions to one’s inner health. For instance, gastrointestinal problems can occur. Most importantly, since collagen plays such a key role in joint health, when there is a lack of it, common issues start to happen. Whenever injuries to the body occur, the recovery process takes longer as ligaments and tendons are not as held together. That’s why it is important to consume proper amounts of collagen daily to ensure the tissues stay glued together tight.

Where One Can Get Collagen

As mentioned, the kind of collagen that the body does not produce is formed from the amino acids that come from the protein that is consumed. This protein can come from a variety of different types of foods like eggs, chicken, meat, pork, and fish. For non-meat eaters, legumes, dairy, leafy green vegetables, berries, garlic, tomatoes, and beans are good foods to support higher levels of collagen. As with any type of helpful nutrient, it is extremely difficult to obtain the right amount of collagen according to one’s needs. Everyone’s hectic life takes away from the opportunity to perform certain actions. In this case, it involves measuring individual amounts of collagen per meal. It’s much better to simply just use safe and simple supplements. With the supplementation of adequate

amounts of collagen, one’s body can start to look and feel younger. More collagen means fewer wrinkles and fine lines, stronger joints, and just a more put-together body.  As with any nutrient, it’s important to know what type of product you are using that contains it.
