HealthIs your tank full?

Is your tank full?

You are driving along in your car, and everything is running smoothly. The motor is humming, and the tires are rolling. Your car is doing its primary job. Getting you to your destination.

There are no squeaks, clacks, or clanging noises to cause concern. On the surface, it appears that your day is going as it should. Then, it starts.

The engine sputters; it seems to stall. The car coughs and spits, then it dies completely.

What happened?

This vehicle of yours is newer; there should be nothing wrong. It’s still under warranty, and you’ve never had an issue. As you look at your control panel, you see it.

You have allowed the car to run out of gas.

Geez… that’s never happened before. Of course, with your hectic schedule and life in general, you’ve been a bit distracted. Shuttling from one place to another with just minutes in-between obligations, you have failed to pay attention to one of your car’s essential requirements for operation.

This may seem elementary, but it does happen. And it happens every day.

The same premise applies to your body. There are essential elements that your body needs to run smoothly. Your body doesn’t produce them; if you don’t pay attention, you can run out of gas.

All the components you need.

Caring for your body and health seems to be part of our programming. We all need shelter, food, and water to maintain our body’s basic operations.

We are exposed to the elements without proper shelter, causing discomfort from the cold and heat. Discomfort can lead to undue stress on the body, and stress can lead to us getting sick.

Water, of course, is vital. It only takes three days or so for our body to shut down from dehydration.

And, we may be able to survive a little longer without food entirely. However, having the wrong food intake or not getting the proper nutrients is a sound way to quickly run out of energy.

How often have you heard it from friends, family members, and co-workers – “I feel worn out,” or “I just don’t have any energy.” It’s widespread, and there are some essential things to consider when you constantly feel sluggish or lack the energy you once had.

Here are some facts about a nutrient you may know something about, may have heard about, or maybe are just discovering this information. Either way, it is important to consider everything your body should be getting.

Fuel for your fire.

The food we eat is the gas for our engine. However, our food needs a critical nutrient to turn all those proteins and carbs into energy. That nutrient is vitamin B12; this complex of vitamins is not made naturally in the body as some others are. So, we must intake the appropriate amount.

It is estimated that up to 20% of the population aged 60 and older are low or borderline deficient in this necessary nutrient. But what is vitamin B12, and what does it do for our body exactly?

Vitamin B12 performs an essential role in the formation of red blood cells and cellular metabolism. It is also critical for nerve function and DNA production, allowing our cells to replicate.

There are three types of B12 used by the body for specific functions:

A natural form of B12 mainly used to detoxify the body. It is so good at this job it is considered the first treatment for cyanide poisoning. Is also critical enough to be listed on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines.

Methylcobalamin – An active form of B12 essential in nerve function and readily absorbed by the body. It is also used to treat peripheral neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy.

Adenosylcobalamin – This form of B12 is critical in producing energy at the cellular level. Also, it is used to develop and support DNA and RNA within cells.

Suggestion to add on: only form of b12 that stores in the liver for reserve use.

So, vitamin B12 is essential for our body to function and perform at peak levels. However, what does it look like when you are not getting enough B12, and where do you find it?

You may feel no symptoms with only a mild deficiency of this vitamin. You could present with any of the following as the lack of B12 advances to a more moderate level.

  • Lack of energy
  • Feeling faint
  • Pallor
  • Anemia
  • Breathlessness
  • Hair loss
  • Soreness of the tongue
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Slow thinking
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Low blood pressure
  • Occasional Joint pain

As the deficiency in vitamin B12 progresses, more severe symptoms can occur.

  • Reduced heart function
  • Decreased taste and smell
  • Changes in your reflexes
  • Depression, guilt, and anxiety
  • Memory problems
  • Psychosis
  • Blurred vision
  • Poor muscle function

If untreated for too long, severe vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can become permanent.

Many problems are caused by conditions that create malabsorption of vitamin B12, including gastritis, gastric surgeries, inflammation of the pancreas, and intestinal parasites.

The long-term use of proton pump inhibitors for reflux disease and H2-receptor blockers – commonly used to treat high blood pressure – can also lead to B12 absorption issues.

However, mild deficiency can be solved by adjusting your diet with a balance of healthy foods rich in vitamin B12.

Natural Sources

A proper diet should include enough sources of B12 to meet your daily needs. So, consider these choices with the highest amounts as you make your meal plans.

Meat and Seafood – The richest sources of B12 from animal products come from – animal liver and kidneys, fish, eggs, octopus, oysters, and clams. If these foods are not high on your list of preferred ingredients – never fear! You can also find good sources of B12 in tuna, crab, ground beef, herring, and wild game meat. Nearly all animal meat contains B12.

Dairy products – These animal products are also very high in B12. Milk, cheese, and yogurt are all excellent sources to bolster your intake.

Fruits and vegetables – Only a few vegetables provide significant B12. The first is Nori – the Japanese word for seaweed. This can come dried as a snack and contains more B12 than any other vegetable. You would have to eat around three-and-a-half ounces of Nori to meet the daily recommended levels.

The second highest source of B12 from a vegetable is Shitake mushrooms. The amount of B12 in each mushroom can vary greatly. However – if you can eat two cups of dried shiitakes a day – it should provide your recommended amount.

There are no fruits known to contain large amounts of B12; thus, fruits are not considered a source of this essential vitamin.

Fortified foods – plant-based milk, cereal, and nutritional yeast can all be fortified with B12, making them a good source, especially for those on a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Increasing your dietary intake of B12 is a great way to ensure you get enough. As you can see, though, for those who do not make animal products a part of their diets, receiving what you need can be a daunting task.

The other alternative is to find a supplement that provides your daily source of B12. The team at Super Good Stuff has created an excellent full-spectrum B12 supplement that is highly absorbable.

B-12 Complete

For over 28 years, Super Good Stuff has been producing some of the finest wellness products available. This shows up in how they created this product to meet your daily needs of B12.

This full spectrum B12 supplement offers the three types needed for optimal levels within your body.

A daily dose of B12 Complete will maintain healthy nerves, strengthen the immune system, detox the body, and aid in the creation of red blood cells. It will also assist with cellular energy generation to maintain a healthy energy level.

B12 Complete contains the three beneficial forms of B12-

This powerful formula also includes Folate, which is critical in the absorption of B12. Other B12 supplements contain Folic Acid. While this may be more cost-effective, only 40% of this form of Folate is processed by the body. Not one to skimp on quality, Super Good Stuff only uses pure Folate for the most efficient processing of B12.

GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is also included in the formulation of B12 Complete. This potent neurotransmitter helps send messages between the brain and nervous system. It is often used as a stand-alone supplement to promote sleep and improve one’s mood.

The folks at Super Good Stuff didn’t stop there with this product. Also included in B12 Complete is Inositol. This used to be considered vitamin B8 and is used widely to-

Since absorption of vitamin B12 is a problem for many, nothing was left to chance with B12 Complete. This formula was designed so everyone can get the daily dose of B12 and feel their very best.

Being in business for 28 years, Super Good Stuff has developed many products to help you live the most full and productive life possible.

I never have to think about using it to often as with pharmaceuticals. I know the doc (may need to redact this as Keith is not a doc – could replace it with “founder”) that created this. I trust him with my life.

There is a reason this product is number one in the Super Good Stuff catalog, it cleans, reduces inflammation, and it just plain works. Dyonysia stated it quite well in this write-up:

After using this product for a couple of weeks a couple of years ago, I have not had a sinus infection since. Recommended it to a peer, suffered with constant nasal stuffiness and sinus infections – no problems anymore
