Focus on what matters

Finally, you are finished. You throw your head back and stretch your neck. The reports are finished, and your boss will be pleased. This power session was just what you needed.

You feel a great sense of accomplishment and power down your computer. The day is done. Over the last four hours, you have done nothing but stare at your screen and type, research, and stare at your screen more.

Exhausted, you push yourself away from your desk. You throw your personal items in your bag and stand up. Then it hits you.

You turn and look at the wall, staring at the art deco print that has been there since you started with the company. The regular crisp lines are hazy, and the images seem to melt together. Something seems off. It doesn’t look right.

Around the office, you look at everyday objects, and it appears as though a haze is around everything. Staring more intently, you focus on the image. Maybe your eyes just need time to adjust. You turn your head left, then right, hoping the print will become more apparent. It doesn’t, and that brings you no comfort.

There is no doubt about it; your vision is blurry. You close your eyes hard and rub them. They feel dry and tired.

This always seems to happen whenever you spend this much time on a project.

Sometimes you get headaches accompanying blurred vision, and your eyes constantly feel dry. But what can you do? This is your career; you excel at it, and this work is how you pay the bills. What is it that causes you such distress and discomfort?

You think to yourself that there must be something that can be done. You are not the only person who stares at a screen for hours on end.

As you already know, the general population spends more time staring at phone screens and computers than ever before. It has become a far more common problem. Fortunately, science has been advancing in what can be done about eye fatigue and strain caused by staring at screens.

Let’s look at some of the causes of this strain and then discover solutions that protect and improve the health of your eyes from within.

Giving you the blues.

The light emitted from the sun and artificial light comprises a spectrum of colors. These colors are:

  • orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Indigo
  • Violet
  • Blue

Visible in all light, the color of great concern to eye care professionals is blue light. Blue light causes much strain on the eye because it has a shorter wavelength and higher energy than other colors.

Studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells like the ones found in the human retina. And, having too much exposure to blue light, either from the sun or artificial light, raises your risk of eye diseases such as retinal damage and macular degeneration.

Your retina and the center of your retina (macula) help you see clearly, and studies have shown damage to both critical parts of your eye. But what are some warning signs that you are getting too much blue light?

Headaches/Migraines – One of the more common problems for those with over-exposure to light. And those that are already sensitive to light can have recurrent migraines triggered by too much blue light.

Eye Strain – Your eyes must work extra hard coping with blue light, and you begin to experience eye strain. Over long periods of exposure, this strain can contribute to vision issues such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Blurry Vision – Our natural eye’s natural filters are not fit for blocking blue light, so as you work long hours staring at a screen, it can lead to blurred vision.

Dry Eyes – This is another common problem with long-term exposure to blue light. The extended viewing of devices such as LED, phone, and computer screens causes an imbalance in the eyes. We are less likely to blink and produce moisture.

Inability to Focus – It’s challenging to stay focused with eye strain and chronic headaches. You tend to be less productive as time passes, and we all need to stay productive.

Erratic Sleep Patterns – Many people check emails or social media before bedtime. This can be damaging since blue light disrupts your circadian rhythm, which is the body’s natural release of the hormone melatonin. This disruption tricks our body into thinking it is daytime and makes falling asleep much more difficult. This can lead to obesity and depression.

All individuals, regardless of age, can succumb to the effects of blue light exposure. However, those of us required to spend hours daily in front of a screen are at the most significant risk.

What can be done?

You may now ask, “What can I do about blue light exposure.” And that is a fair question considering how exposed most of us are to these harmful light rays.

There is, of course, blue light blocking glass. These lenses filter out blue light, and you have probably seen some people wearing yellow-tinted lenses. This can be a good option for some, but constantly wearing a device like this is not always sensible for others.

With much research on blue light, it has come to the forefront that specific vitamins and supplements can strengthen and protect your eyes. Let’s look at a few of these.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Also known as DHA and EPA, Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily fish. They have been touted for their many health benefits.

What may be lesser known is its beneficial properties to eye health. DHA makes up about 30% of brain matter and has been shown to decrease age-related vision loss.

This potent vitamin is also essential in producing tears to help keep the eyes moist and healthy. It is challenging to consume enough DHA and EPA to be beneficial to the eyes since very few food sources have a significant concentration of Omega-3.

Therefore, a good supplement is recommended by most eye care professionals.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin – A robust set of antioxidants and part of the carotenoid family. Carotenoids are what give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors. They are phytonutrients (plant chemicals) that are found in many types of plants.

These antioxidants are the only dietary carotenoids in your retina and are primarily concentrated in the macula region.

This area is located in the back of your eye and is critical for vision. Research now suggests that Lutein and Zeaxanthin play an essential role in:

  • Defending against free radicals and oxidative stress
  • Enhancing the sharpness of your vision
  • Suppressing inflammation
  • Reducing glare impairment
  • Protecting your eyes from harmful blue light

So, there are some steps you can take to protect your eyes. These supplements have been proven to provide the nutrients needed to battle the onslaught they face daily.

Where do you turn to ensure you get the optimal amount of supplements for your eyes?

Fortunately, there is a line of products created by eye physicians for this purpose.
